The Kaokoland is one of the last remaining wilderness areas … a barren inaccessible region with lots of mystique, scenic beauty and the nomadic Himba culture. The latter still live according to ancient traditions. The Kaokoland is also the home of the famous desert elephant, lion and giraffe that have adapted through time to survive in these conditions. The northern section of this region borders the Cunene River, the natural boundary between Namibia and Angola. Awesome scenes of beautiful waterfalls, palm trees, rugged mountains and dune landscapes are to be found along this river belt.

The Richtersveld National Park is home to the only true mountain desert in South Africa. It is situated in the Northern Cape on the border with Namibia and forms part of the Ai-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. On tour, you will see impressive rock formations, abundant succulents and endemic plant life such as the famed Quiver trees, massive aloes and, ‘halfmense’(’semi-human’ trees) set majestically within an all-encompassing silence. We also visit some of the communities.
The route follow the Orange River to its mouth and from Port Nolloth we head back to Springbok where the 5-day tour begins and ends.

If this is going to be your first introduction to the Namib it will really be an exceptional experience. The emphasis is not only on the adrenaline thrill of dune driving, but a huge part of the focus of this tour is a special look at the plants; small creatures and wildlife that made this desert their home. Our guides will capture your imagination with their knowledge on the fauna and flora of the desert. These same guides will display their cooking skills with the preparation of 3-mouth watering meals daily. If you are a seasoned desert traveller this is the ultimate!

The adrenaline rush is unparalleled to any other you might have experienced with previous desert tours. The dunes along this stretch of Namib are higher and more challenging and require technique to manoeuvre from one dune strait to the next. The magnitude of what awaits you is difficult to express in words. Although the emphasis is not on the 4×4 and off-road driving, the adventures is taking place amongst the world’s highest sand dunes thus implying that you should be proficient in off-road driving and previous sand driving is a recommendation.

Join us on “The Highwayman’s Adventure Route” on deep sand tracks through the vast expanse of Southern Africa’s largest conservation area.

The 06 Feb trips commence at Khama Rhino Sanctuary, we wend our way south, camping “rough” in the bush, to where the adventure ends in Nossop. The 19 Feb trip does the reverse journey from Nossop to Khama Rhino Sanctuary.

Towards the end of summer, presuming reasonable rains have fallen in the area, the Kgalagadi is noted for its large number of resident eagles, such as the Martial, Tawny, Black Breasted, Snake and Bateleur. These are joined in February and March by the migrant raptors, the Booted Eagle and Steppe Buzzard, and the rare Lesser Spotted Eagle.

We hope to be there when the numbers of eagles will be at their highest. However, we must not forget all the other wildlife we expect to see in the harsh but magnificent Kgalagadi Trans-frontier.
