The Kaokoland is one of the last remaining wilderness areas … a barren inaccessible region with lots of mystique, scenic beauty and the nomadic Himba culture. The latter still live according to ancient traditions. The Kaokoland is also the home of the famous desert elephant, lion and giraffe that have adapted through time to survive in these conditions. The northern section of this region borders the Cunene River, the natural boundary between Namibia and Angola. Awesome scenes of beautiful waterfalls, palm trees, rugged mountains and dune landscapes are to be found along this river belt.

Bring your family, your 4×4 or Sports Utility and join the Team on our self-drive Zululand Safari. This is in no way a “hard core” adventure and no previous 4×4 experience is required.

Take this opportunity to drive and walk in South Africa’s oldest game reserve, and royal hunting ground of Shaka Zulu. Frank and one of his former Zulu colleagues will enhance this experience and share anecdotes of rhino protection, game capture and Zulu history.

Accessible to only 4X4’s, Maputuland’s sand tracks meander past fresh-water inland lakes, under tropical tree canopies and to beaches lined with coral reefs.

Our accommodation on this adventure, ranges from unfenced bush lodges to chalets on the dunes in the Kosi Bay lake system

Your tour leader, is a highly skilled tour guide with extensive experience in tour guiding, 4×4 driver training and biological interpretation. He is also an extensively trained game ranger with expert knowledge in wildlife conservation, as well as guided walks and tours.

The trusty bush chef will be close on hand to assist lodge staff with all our catering requirements.

Destination: Angola
Tour: ANGOLA Battlefields: Winds of Change over Africa
Date: 16 May – 3 June 2011

Angola is a beautiful country with a war torn history. This tour will reflect the wonderful scenery, which is in stark contrast to the skeleton remainders of war that dots the countryside. The route will take you through various vegetation zones, landscapes and battle sites of various stages of the war.

On 14 October 1975 Task Force Zulu (South African Defense Force) crossed the border into Angola in what became known as Operation Savannah. This was the first
large scale cross border operation of the “Bush War” and can be seen as the commencement of the so-called “War for Africa”.

This conflict ended with a showdown between the forces during 1987 and 1988 around the town of Cuito Cuanavale, which led to the independence of Namibia and
peace in the region.

This is a tour through Angola visiting some battles sites of the “War for Africa”. The intention of the tour is not to justify the war, or project it in a one-sided light. We want to project a balanced view of the events in Angola, highlight the beauty and potential of the country and the people and make a positive contribution to economic development. Don’t miss this departure date!
