Overview

Coast to Coast from Torra Bay/Henties Bay, Namibia to Beira, Mozambique

Background:
It is not often that an opportunity presents itself to drive from the West Coast to the East Coast of Africa on nearly the same latitude. The Torra Bay / Henties Bay area along the Skeleton Coast of Namibia is widely known as one of the driest places on Africa’s West Coast and it is from here where our Trans Africa expedition starts. Beira in Mozambique, on the East Coast of Africa, on the other hand, is one of the wettest regions on the East Coast and that will be our final destination.

In true Live the Journey style we developed an absolutely unique experience. This route, mainly via back roads, will take you on a journey from the driest area on the West Coast of the African continent to the wettest area on the East Coast.

Live the Journey expeditions are unique and memorable with a Kingsley Holgate or David Livingstone explorer flair. The adventurous traveller will drive routes that only a few has driven before, and will be part of something unique, a "once off" memorable journey. We would like to invite you to join us on this experience of a lifetime.

On this tour we offer different booking options:

Option 1: join us for the Torra Bay / Henties Bay to Kasane sector in part 1 or the Kasane to Beira sector, part 2.
Option 2: join us for the whole expedition from start to finish.

"I was very lucky to be part of the first Live the journey trip driving from Henties Bay across Namibia into Botswana, along forgotten hunting tracks all the way to Kasane. It was captivating, supremely memorable and a testament to why we love Africa. Can't wait for the next instalment from Kasane to Beira."' - Pierre Steyn, GO! Magazine Editor

Part 2: Departure date 28 April 2025 – 11 May 2025
The Route: Kasane to Beira/Inhassoro (Mozambique)

Those who have already joined us on the previous Henties Bay to Kasane expedition will know how unique this experience and whole project is. We invite you to join us on 28 April in Kasane to complete the expedition route as we explore the beauty of Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

The starting point for Part 2 is Kasane in Botswana. As with Live the Journey's tours, no stone has been left unturned to offer a truly unique experience. We are privileged to have as tour leaders, Diets and Jeanne van der Sande, who will guide us through their heartland, Zimbabwe.

Itinerary

DAY 01:

The group meet the afternoon of 28 April at Chobe Safari Lodge, Kasane, on the banks of the Chobe River. There will be time for final preparations to be ready for the exceptional route that we will drive over the next 2 weeks to Beira (Inhasorro) on the Mozambican coast. Set up camp for the night.
Enjoy a sundowner cruise and get to know your fellow tour members.

O/N Camping: Shared Campsite at Chobe Safari lodge (possibility to upgrade to rooms)
Breakfast, Dinner and drinks excluded - for your own account at the a la carte restaurant on site.

DAY 02:

An early morning start is necessary as we want to reach our campsite close to Binga in Zimbabwe. We will cross the border at Kasane going into Zimbabwe and this might take some time. You will have leisure time in Vic Falls before heading to Maabwe Bay campsite on Lake Kariba, near the Sebubgwe River mouth. We will try to take back roads, with the focus on offering special experiences.

O/N Camping: Shared Campsite at Maabwe Bay Campsite
Meals and drinks excluded – clients will contribute towards a communal dinner and participate in the preparations.

DAY 03 & 04:

From Maabwe Bay campsite we will travel east towards Matusadona National Park where we will spend the next 2 nights. We can stock up on food and drinks in Binga, if needed, enroute. Flanked by Lake Kariba in the north, and two perennial rivers, the Ume and the Sanyati, this remote, rugged park presents enormous potential for wildlife sightings. Matusadona National Park was proclaimed a non-hunting area in 1958 and as such is wonderfully rich in wildlife and vegetation. We will set up camp for the evening.

O/N Camping: Shared Campsite at Tashinga Campsite Matusadona NP
Meals and drinks excluded – clients will contribute towards a communal dinner and participate in the preparations.

DAY 05:

We will pack-up and travel to the town of Kariba, where we will overnight at the Warthog Safari Camp campsite. The town of Kariba was built at the site of the hydro-electric dam in the Zambezi River, which is a focus for tourism. It’s a gateway to Lake Kariba, known for its houseboats, hippos and tiger fish. In Kariba Heights, a lookout offers panoramic views of the lake. Nearby, the circular Chapel of Santa Barbara has a memorial to workers who died during the construction of the Kariba Dam in the 1950s.

O/N Camping: Shared Campsite at Warthog Safari Camp
Meals included: Dinner and Breakfast at the lodge (Drinks excluded – for your own account)

DAY 06 - 08:

Today we make our way to Mana pools. Mana Pools National Park is in the far north of Zimbabwe. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Mana Pools offers 2,500 km² of untouched nature to explore. Home to
over 100 mammal species, and more than 450 bird species, it has the highest concentration of hippos and crocodiles in the country. Large populations of elephant, hippo and Nile crocodile gather at sunrise in the Long Pool. In the park’s south, lions wait for prey around the waterhole at Chitake Spring. We will spend 3 nights camping in the park and explore during the day.

O/N Camping: Shared Campsite at Nyamepi campsite Mana Pools
Meals and drinks excluded – clients will contribute towards a communal dinner and participate in the preparations.

DAY 09:

Today we have a very long stretch ahead and we need to depart very early. We leave and travel southeast towards the town of Mutare, close to the border of Mozambique. Overnight is at the White Horse Inn, one of Zimbabwe's best known country hotels, with a reputation for comfort and quiet relaxation in a wooded corner of the Bvumba Mountains. The Inn is surrounded by lush gardens and offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. We will enjoy a bit of luxury tonight and sleep in the lodge rooms instead of camping.

O/N Camping: Twin/Double Rooms at White Horse Inn
Meals included: Dinner and Breakfast at the lodge (Drinks excluded – for your own account)

DAY 10 & 11:

We leave Zimbabwe behind today and travel over the Forbes/Machipanda border post into Mozambique. Tonight, we will camp at Piet van Zyl’s campsite close to the Gorongosa National Park.
Piet is a South African and a walking encyclopedia and we will enjoy his amazing knowledge.

We will spend 2 nights here and enjoy a morning game drive with the park rangers in Gorongosa National Park. Gorongosa National Park does not permit self-drive game viewing as all activities are conducted by qualified guides and game rangers. Gorongosa is an up-coming safari destination and one of the top National Parks in Mozambique.

O/N Camping: Shared Campsite at Piets Place Gorongoza (limited rooms available for upgrade)
Meals included: Dinner and Breakfast at the guesthouse (Drinks excluded – for your own account)

DAY 12 & 13:

We will reach the East Coast of Mozambique today. For logistical reasons it is better to drive to Inhassoro south of Beira. We will set up camp at a local campsite for the last 2 nights of our trip. Inhassoro is a beautiful, secluded village approximately 80 km north of Vilanculos. The small fishing town on the Indian Ocean coast is ideal for travellers who want to explore Mozambique's popular Bazaruto Archipelago (the five islands are: Bazaruto, Benguera, Magarruque, Santa Carolina and Bangue - most are national parks). There are numerous restaurants and bars to indulge at including Inhassoro-johnsons Bar, Mystic Blue Bay Adventures and Rossha Sea Food to name a few. Enjoy delicious seafood and ice-cold drinks with spectacular beach and island views on the horizon.

O/N Camping: Shared Campsite at Goody Villas or similar (possible upgrade to basic rooms)
Meals and drinks excluded – clients will contribute towards a communal dinner and participate in the preparations, or we might have dinner at a local a la carte restaurant for your own account.

DAY 14:

Join us on the post tour trip to Gonarezhou National Park or say your goodbyes for those who need to depart home.

END OF TOUR

Clients can drive their own route home from Inhassoro or join us for an optional 5 nights to Gonarezhou en route home! More information available upon request.
