Why visit India

Why India needs to be experienced more than once.

The Taj Mahal

Yes, it lives up to it. Best at sunrise from the south gate, or from across the Yamuna at sunset. A monument built for love by a grieving emperor.

Rajasthan’s palaces

Jaipur (pink), Jodhpur (blue), Udaipur (white) — desert kingdoms with painted forts, vintage cars and palace hotels you can actually sleep in.

Kerala’s backwaters

Houseboat slowly through palm-lined canals in southern India. Coconut, fish curry, slowness.

Varanasi at dawn

The holy city on the Ganges — funeral pyres, morning bathers, marigold offerings drifting downstream. Profoundly affecting.

Food, every meal

South Indian dosas, North Indian curries, Bengali sweets, Mughlai biryanis, Goan vindaloos, Kashmiri wazwan. Vegetarians have it best in the world.

Tiger safari

Ranthambore, Bandhavgarh, Kanha — India still has Bengal tigers. Our specialists know which park and which time.

Prime — ideal for all activities
Good — shoulder season, fewer crowds
Do not recommend — weather or seasonal limits
Prime · Oct – Mar

Cool, dry, comfortable across most of the country. Christmas peak — book ahead. The Pushkar Camel Fair (Nov) and Holi (Mar) are extraordinary.

Good · Apr · Sep

Shoulder months. Northern India gets hot in April; September is end-of-monsoon green. Lower rates.

Do not recommend · May – Aug

Peak heat gives way to monsoon season during this stretch. Ladakh and the Himalayas stay accessible throughout, but much of the rest of India becomes uncomfortable to travel through.

Did you know?

A few things about India most visitors don’t expect.

01
India will soon overtake China.

In population — already happened (2023). In economy — probably by 2030. Yet 65% of Indians still live in villages.

02
India has 22 official languages.

Plus 1,600 dialects. Hindi and English are the working languages of government. A Tamil speaker and a Bengali speaker often use English with each other.

03
It’s the only country with a tiger as national animal AND a lion in its emblem.

The tiger is the national animal. But the four-lion Sarnath capital from Emperor Ashoka’s era is the official state emblem.
